There is a poor old biddy who I sometimes come across here in Göttingen, rather often on the bus (HINT: an enclosed, moving space... Arrgghh!!!), who I believe suffers from some form of schizophrenia. Let's assume that my sympathy is implicit here and cut out any long and sanctimonious essays upon the destructive nature of mental illness. I know. She seems to believe that I speak to her, evidently saying and doing dreadful and outlandish things as she usually manages to make her extreme displeasure with me known. Mostly it's no worse than any of the stuff said or done to me while I was at RNIB. One of the recurring themes is that I am a witch. Not an earthmother type, but an actual evil, malicious, satanic sort. Now there
's a new one for me! It's annoying for me, but worse for her altogether and she's probably being quite brave in tackling me about my ...um... peccadillo.
A general theory is thatshe gets this way with me especially should I be wearing my black coat or anything black and floaty. The last time I wore anything black and floaty was when it was still fairly parky and I tried out my black velvet floaty skirt and my red crushed velvet top (not floaty, but probably not helping with the general impression) and approached the bus stop at a completely baroque
time and... she was there... The freaky part of this was that although I hadn't seen her for weeks, I had thought, "Blimey! I hope that Mad Bus Woman doesn't see me in this!". Which led me to believe that maybe she was right... And I had summoned her to taunt her...
The last act of apparent sympathetic magic
that I took part in was last weekend. Horrible hot and humid weather (36°C) which was enough to make the very air swirl as one fought to move through it. On the Saturday I broke down and we bought a fan which just about made life bearable if turned on and left going at full speed for hours. The next day, there was actually some breeze which made life better, but we still went to the Freibad
for the afternoon, immersion in cold water being the only option for sensible people. And then in the night the heat lightning began and the wind and, finally, the rain. The rest of the week, up until today, has been cold and foggy and generally not so bad. All because we bought a fan!
So, if I see her today and she starts on with her usual imprecations, I can now merely nod and present the evidence...
